A face only a mother could love!

My mother told me I would go far in life.

"The further the better!" said my Dad!

So I wrote this book - you can decide for yourself.

If you look carefully, you can see the tattoo etched onto my forehead with the letters "MUG". It was a gift from my four children.

Who is Andrew Brunton?

I have been asking that question for years!

I'm married to Grace, and Dad to four outstanding children.

I stopped being a wage slave five years ago.

My background is economics, having worked with a utility company (Scottish Hydro Electric, now SSE) as Business Pricing and Forecasting Manager.

I also worked in local government (Fife Council) in Asset Management.

I have more questions than answers in life, however, I have thought through many of the money related challenges in life. This book is my contribution to help answer some of those questions.

Why I wrote this book

I wrote this book because I want to help people have a better relationship with money.

It saddens me to see money mess up life for so many, leaving them disappointed, even traumatised.

The link between mental health and money seems beyond doubt to me.

By observing the relationship people have with money, it seems clear that there are principles which can be applied in life, to put us back in the driving seat of our relationship with money.

Life has humbled me, with money being part of that, so I don't write as someone who has got life 'sussed' - far from it.

I grew up in a home where money was tight.

My parents worked for an organisation which distributed Christian books, and did not pay staff a salary.

Being the oldest of four, I knew not to ask for things which cost money.

I played violin in the school orchestra, not because I enjoyed it, but because playing rugby required a full sports kit.

Sports kit was more expensive than the occasional violin G-string (sometimes it was the E, A or D string).

The orchestra won the day.

I wasn't seen as the coolest kid in class.

Despite that lack of money, my parents showed me how to do life out-with the traditional model of go to school, get a degree, get a good job and save into a retirement fund.

I have also been a little unconventional when it comes to get a degree, get a job, and save into a retirement fund.

Life was conventional in that I got the degree, joined a FTSE 100 energy company as a graduate trainee, worked hard, paid into their pension fund, and had a great time.

I also built a sunbed hire business, a property letting business, built three normal houses and three tiny homes (Barratt Houses won't be losing any sleep), did property development in Europe, and now run my own pension fund.

Along the way I have experienced many kind people, and my fair share of betrayal and cruelty from some I mistakenly held in high regard.

The credit crunch was painful with my business developing property abroad coming to a standstill, leading to a move into local government asset management.

That was interesting.

The good news is that these experiences taught me that where money becomes an idol, it becomes destructive.

Managing money with the right mindset and applying good stewardship, is liberating and can be used to give more choices and enjoyment in life.

I spent twelve years at school, and learned to play violin, quote Shakespeare, do Scottish Country Dancing and how to cross the road safely. Not once did they teach me how to manage money. - Andrew Brunton
